Is your Tech Gear up to Scratch? - Text Version

If you want to scalp the markets, you must make trading decisions within seconds or minutes at the most, and the equipment that connects you to the markets must enable you to do that effectively.

Your primary pieces of equipment will be your computer, your screens and your internet connection. You cannot have delays as data comes in and is processed and then displayed on your screens.

Let’s start by looking at your computer. To seamlessly process the data coming in, it must have adequate working memory, or what is known in computer-speak as RAM. In addition, your processor speed must be suitable.

Having a fast hard-drive also helps. The fastest type of hard-drive available today is the Solid-State Drive or SSD. Unlike conventional Hard-Disk Drives, the SSD has no moving parts making them extremely fast.

Next, let’s talk about your screens. If you want to be a scalper, you do not have time to switch between multiple tabs to see different charts and separate windows for order entry. It should all be laid out in front of you so only your eyes need to move to see the information you need. That means you will need plenty of screen space and most scalpers achieve this by using multiple -monitors. Traders regard screen space as so vital that they call it their “real estate”.

To drive several monitors at high resolutions that have no lag in displaying images, your computer will need a capable graphics card with enough ports for connecting your monitors.

You don’t want to experience even the smallest delays in clicking your mouse to enter or modify an order. That’s why the most dedicated traders will use a traditional wired mouse and keyboard that plug directly into their computers rather than wireless alternatives.

Your internet connection must be stable and fast. This means your computer should plug directly into the router and not rely on Wi-Fi which can drop no matter how close your machine is to the router.

Some traders choose to custom build their own trading computers. Others prefer an off-the-shelf product. Very often, traders will purchase computers that are popular amongst gamers because gamers have many of the same needs as traders: they need fast processing and working memory, image displays that do not lag and lots of screen space with multiple-monitors.

Make sure your computing gear has the technical specifications demanded by scalping!
